Honouring Kerstin Martin: A Leader in Nova Scotia Midwifery

Kerstin Martin was a skilled and compassionate midwife and the force behind the legal recognition and regulation of midwifery in Nova Scotia. As a leader in the Association of Nova Scotia Midwives, she spent years lobbying for the Midwifery Act of 2006, which established midwifery as a regulated profession under the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia (MRCNS).

Her Regulatory Impact:

  • Legislation: She bridged the gap between government officials and practitioners to ensure the 2006 Act was practical and safe for both midwives and families.
  • Standardization: Kerstin helped draft the standards of practice and scope of practice that allow midwives to hold hospital privileges and order diagnostic tests today.
  • Advocacy: She was a vocal advocate for moving midwifery into the publicly funded system ensuring care was covered by MSI and integrated into the IWK Health Centre.

She was also a frequent contributor to media and public forums, often correcting misconceptions about the safety and legality of the profession, maintaining that regulation and public funding were necessary to protect both families and practitioners.

Kersten famously kept “lists” of Nova Scotian midwives working away in Ontario and the UK, waiting for the day she could tell them: “The Council is ready. You can finally come home to practice.”

Her commitment to Midwifery will be remembered.
